I recall back in the 1960s when a lot of us
monitored the 20 meter autostart frequency,
we used the ZCZC and NNNN. For those with
the Model 28 stunt boxes programmed, that
reduced a lot of the junk printed and paper
wasted. I remember that Irv had his stunt
box programmed to start printing with 6FFC.
That way when he got back from flying, he
would only see messages that had W6FFC in
them and not all the chatter and RTTY art.
Later on he even had an automatic response
system that you could invoke when he was away.
You sent his code and quickly switched back
to receive to get his response indicating
that he was hearing you. Awesome stuff then.
In the 1970s we were using Sel-Cal on the
JAARS net on 15 meters. Mostly we had 32 ASRs
and KSRs, so the Sel-Cal was done through a
home-brewed digital box. I still have a
genuine JAARS crystal-controlled receiver
for the 15 meter autostart net.
