[GreenKeys] ASR 33 - another question about the reader

Alf,

Also VERY important to make sure the central shipping screw is removed
from the typing unit from under the base. Makes a awful racket if it
is left in.

Alf,

I have seen the top of the readers warped without a crease, but it
could also be just the plastic cover or the metal plate that sits in
front of the reader that stays bolted to the pan pushing on the reader
metal. Also if you have a 3 piece cover, you can adjust the plastic
reader cover fit to the main cover. When the reader is adjusted
properly to the cover, it will run quietly. When the cover or plate
is pushing on it, it will run with a much louder clunking sound.
Visual, visual, visual is the rule on 33 fixes.

Don & Wayne,
Many thanks for your comment and helpful suggestions. I will have a
look at it tomorrow to see if the top plate is bent up.
IIRC, it looks OK at a quick glance. I assume there would be creasing
of the metal somewhere if it was bent.
I just thought that the feed sprocket and tape out sensor were all
mounted on the frame and it all needs raising up a bit.
Perhaps there a diagram in the TTY manual?

Alf and Don,

Sorry to interject, but those 4 screws under the reader only adjust
the tape reader to the cover for best fit. If the feed sprocket is
low, likely the brushed aluminum top plate has been bent up and must
be carefully bent back to original fit. Also its possible that the
cover is pushing on the top plate and then the 4 screws may help.

The reader stopping is almost surely the tape out contacts which can
be easily adjusted by bending them both, but if the frame is bent as
described above, that would be the first thing to fix. With the cover
off do a lot of visual checks before making any adjustments.

Yes Alf,
Under the reader is a central lock nut. Surrounding the lock nut are
four adjusting screws to position the reader to operate properly.
In addition sometimes the contacts come out of the comb that holds
them in place. You can usually see and reposition them if necessary.

Don et al,
From reading the question posed by Bill, it prompts me to ask about a
problem I have with the reader on the museum ASR33.

It will run if I hold down the cover but for some reason it stops when
I let it go.

I think it could be the Tape Out sensor but I also noticed the tape
drive sprocket seems a bit low down and doesnt engage properly with
the holes in the tape.
Is the protrusion of the whole assembly adjustable?

Any ideas?
