You're working too hard.
All the mechanical Teletypes use standard Underwood typewriter ribbons,
which are still available. They're Nukote B76 ribbons, available from Amazon.com:

The original ribbons were cotton, and these are nylon, so they don't
last as long. You can turn them over and use the other half, though.
