New memorial honors WWII submariners

POINT LOMA — San Diego has a new memorial for veterans who lost their
lives on submarines during World War II.

The 52 Boats Memorial was dedicated last week at Liberty Station’s
NTC Park.

The $250,000 memorial pays tribute to the 3,500 Navy submariners who
died aboard the 52 boats lost during the war. It consists of 52 black
granite monuments, each representing a sunken submarine.

Almost all the money for the memorial came from private donations.
