Ah, good old normal threads and dimensions.

Now there is so much metric hardware around that I am finding an
increasing number of applications where I have no matching nuts and
bolts! I am going to have to start an entire new collection of bins
with different size hardware. It's going to take me a while to be able
to ID stuff by eye.

Hi,

There are some combinations of metric and sae threads that you really
can't sort by eye. There are a couple of combinations that you have to
pay close attention trial fitting a nut onto a bolt. I don't remember
the combinations but I think one involves 3/8 fine sae and one of the
metric sizes. One way (maybe sae bolt/metric nut) the nut goes right on
and doesn't feel all that bad (but won't tighten properly). The other
way round the mismatch is obvious by feel. I have thread pitch gages for
all the standard sizes now just because of that. Stuffing the wrong bolt
into an automotive engine makes for some involved repair work.

So many choices... so little time.
