The original gear sets were metal on the motor and fiber on the
main shaft (Model 15) or the counter shaft (Model 28).  The nylon
gears and black plastic pinions came later.  I don't know if you
are not supposed to combine the two, as in metal-to-nylon or black
stuff -to-fiber.  The black plastic pinions mount with a rubber
part, and I assume that is to reduce noise.
