Not as far as I know - I've seen both metal to nylon and 
nylon to fiber. As long as they are adjusted right - I don't 
think it matters. And yes - nylon in any combination "seems" 
noisier than metal to fiber. I think it's just the nature of 
the material.

You're right about a bit of play in the gears - not so 
important "tooth to tooth" as it is *not* to let the teeth 
of one gear "bottom" in the groove of the other - and yes - 
with nylon - that seems to be noisier...
