That now explains why the AN/UGC-74 TTYs have a switch to select Bell as "S" or "J".

  Here is the reason why...

  The Teletype Model 32 that you have was built as a Telex machine.  Since it ran on the international Telex network, it was necessary to conform to that standard.  The CCITT standard called for FIGS S is apostrophe and FIGS J is the BELL.  If there were no international Telex standards, some guy in Germany would send you a Telex message using apostrophe and you would get the BELL.
