Thanks for the advice on the WD-40 John,

It was an act-of-desperation to solve the stuck mechanisms.  Once
I removed all the hammers, it was very clean inside.  I did use Simple
Green on a damp cloth to clean up the insides.  The machine was 
virtually "new" but for the platen melt-down.
