That's because, if I recall correctly, a triac is, essentially, a pair of diodes back-to-back. As to what specific characteristic makes it not want to conduct DC, well... that I couldn't say. I just know it's not the right device to use for a DC circuit.
Either an optocoupler or a DC-rated solid-state relay should be used.
