The AN/GRC-46 consisted of the radio (AN/GRC-19) and TTY equipment mounted
in a S-144 type shelter, which was typically mounted on a 3/4 ton M37
truck.
The AN/VRC-29 consisted of the same radio & TTY equipment mounted in an
armored personnel carrier (no shelter).
See TM 11-5815-204-10 & TM 11-5815-204-20 on Google Books. (These manuals
were originally printed in 1959/60, but the most recent change notice shown
is June 1980.) The AN/GRC-142 "replacement" was fielded in 1967 ( I saw one
at our Batallion HQ in Viet Nam in 1967.) But apparently the GRC-46 must
have been pretty good to be still in service about 15 years after it was
"replaced" by the GRC-142.
The primary power was 28VDC which could be supplied by the vehicle (or an
external generator), thus the GRC-46/VRC-29 could be operated "mobile".
(There were 28VDC motor-generators to provide 115VAC for the TTY & crypto
equipment.)
Have fun,
Duncan
