Hi All:
I am continuing work on my poor old KSR-33 which a friend
had in his barn for the past 20 years.
I finally decided I was wasting my time trying to do much
until I gave it a good bath, so removed the motor/capacitor
and motor control relay, plunked the printer unit into a
rubbermaid tote, and soaked the lower portion in two
gallons mineral spirits/Varsol for a day. You wouldn't have
believed the number of seed husks that flowed out despite a
week of cleaning. The next morning, I used a parts brush on
it, then blew it out with compressed air from my
compressor. The difference was like the difference between
night and day.
I then replaced the rail the carriage travels on, as it was
very pitted and catching the carriage as it returned. Road
bumps in the way of progress, I guess.
Then I worked on the platen assy. and replaced the platen.
I thoroughly re-lubed the machine according to Teleype's
lubrication practise, then reassembled the printer on its
base and to the keyboard.
Everything appears to be working, except for the CR and
Line Feed. I am now working on that.
I have posted a new "After" photo on one of my web sites
