I notice a 1939 date code on the capacitor on the keyboard base.
That's an early one....

As long as the TTY paper is fresh, the paper feed system
works OK. If the paper is a little old (tears easily, or, as
with some of my old rolls...crumbles like parchment!)
there will be nothing but frustration. And, as Jim pointed out,
without that paper guide that rides behind the platen, trying
to feed paper the "stock" way would be a disaster.

Some have asked for photos under the hood and of the paper handling 
inside. I don't see anything special for handling the paper and I
don't 
recall there being a problem with the current arrangement. Another
round 
of pictures this time under the cover. Amazing engineers we had back
in 
the day, and they created this work of art without the aid of CAD.

The sound deadening padded panels inside the cover are all intact with

no rips, surprisingly.

Its a little dirtier than I recall it being, but hopefully not too
bad, 
and hopefully a shot of the air compressor air will do wonders. For
