John,
Teletypewriters (both Teletype Corp & Kleinschmidt) used in military
tactical operations were designed to operate from local power sources,
(such as generators) that might not be well regulated. A series-governed
motor was used that could be adjusted for the proper speed. (Even though
TTY is a non-synchronous system, the motor speeds of all units in a network
need to be fairly close for optimum operation.) For fixed station
operation, a synchonous motor keeps the TTY machine locked to the 60 cycle
line.
The series-governed motor has a disk on one end that has dots painted on
it. You look at the dots through a slot in the vibrating tuning fork and
adjust the motor speed until the dots stop moving.
The vibration rate of the tuning fork must be a fraction of the motor
speed, so a KLI tunning fork won't work with a Teletype Corp. machine and
vice versa. But the 180 vps tunning fork will work on all KLI machines.
73 & have fun,
