Lou -- that sounds like the correct boot sequence for the ST-8000  
(actually for the ST-8000A as well).  Once you get past the firmware  
version point the display should be indicating audio tones.  Your  
best bet is to call Hal and order up a manual as there are some  
things about it's operation that are not intuitively obvious, and  
there are a number of internal settings that need to either be  
checked or changed to meet your particular station requirements.

One thing to file away....if the memory function is not functioning  
correctly, i.e. it's not remembering tones/splits etc. there is a fix  
and I can provide the info to you....it entails replacing a NVRAM  
chip that is easy to purchase and a snap to install.
