I had a similar experience with some people and my JBL Century
speakers... they were over visiting - and noticed them (I had the blue
egg-crate grills on mine, so they were a little hard not to notice) -
and they asked if they could hear them. The gentleman was very
impressed and noted he was going to start saving to buy a pair - his
wife asked how come every little scratch / flaw in the record was
"painfully" obvious... fortunately, I didn't have to try to explain it
to her - as he noted:"well, you see, dear - our system is a piece of
S*** - and doesn't have any more fidelity than telephone". I have a
strong feeling he was rather lonely that evening after getting home - as
that was "her" stereo before they married -

It's interesting to watch some people's reaction to something like a
recording of a pipe organ (with 32 foot ranks) played on my system - I
still have the centurys - but they aren't hooked up - they just sit on
some cabinets in the living room - however - being visible people
"assume" that's what they are listening to... You should see their
faces when I play something that shakes the whole house - even at low
volume. Most of the time I don't bother pointing out that those
18X26X36 inch 175 pound cabinets the Centurys are sitting on - are in
fact JBL Sovereigns that ARE hooked up... <grin!>

best regards...
