It is a LETS (Law Enforcement Teletype Service) machine. That
explains why it was in service so long.
LETS and power company machines were the last services to go. The
police wanted to keep them. Some of us used to maintain them after
ownership was transferring to the municipality. At some point the
larger cities and towns went to LEADS machines which were M35 ASRs on
a data network. Computers finally replaced the M35s on LEADS service.

I have forgotten what the LEADS acronym stands for. I think it was /
is Law Enforcement Advanced Data Service.

You need to keep that machine preserved as 90 percent or more of them
were simply put out for the trash.

Hi Folks,

Here's a URL to the pix my son put up for me. This is the machine
that was
virtually snatched from the garbage collection truck just two houses
away
from the machine. My friend grabbed it for me as I was out of
town....virtually a minute ahead of the truck! ! !

Rice found it on Craig's list and let me know....he's in NM and I'm in
NJ !
! What a world, huh? It was from the Bernards Twp. Police Dept. in
Basking Ridge NJ. Carrier fed from a C.O. Note the KB cover
"converting"
the KSR to an RO.....LOL

Jack filled me in on the details and feels the ST-8000A can replicate
the
carrier input to operate the machine. It has 100 WPM gears and the
8000A
should be able to up convert 60 WPM to 100 WPM if I understand it
correctly.
