The ST-8000A does regenerate the signal (if you select the function), but only at the same baud rate. It decides whether a bit is a mark or space, then outputs that decision in terms of a clean character.

Not that I qualify as any kind of expert here, But when I was playing
with the
manual for my ST-8000A, I got the feeling it was not a regenerative modem.
The speed settings were either the relative bandwidth of the audio TX and RX
signals, and the spped via the unit communicates via the remote port.
