All,
The ST-8000A does have a REGEN option that
you can select from the front panel. If you use that option, you need
to specify the baud rate. If REGEN is not selected, what comes, in
goes out,
errors and all.
The ST-8000A has balanced, 600 ohm inputs and outputs. For
simplicity's
sake, I grounded one side of each.
Certain standard Dovetron models have the FIFO buffers so you can
up/down
convert.
Many, but not all, of the TEMPEST Dovetrons can be optioned to
up-convert...you can receive at 60, 67, or 75 wpm and print it out
at 100 wpm. You cannot down-convert because these models do not have
the FIF buffers (same as the UT-4 setup).

Not that I qualify as any kind of expert here, But when I was playing
with the
manual for my ST-8000A, I got the feeling it was not a regenerative
modem.
The speed settings were either the relative bandwidth of the audio TX
and RX
signals, and the spped via the unit communicates via the remote port.
I could be wrong though, wouldn't be the first time.
