First I want to think all of those who have been nice enough to share
information with me on the ST8000A. I have obtained a copy of the manual
from HAL.
On the web there is a site that has the switch setting for use of the unit
with a FT-1000 MP.

In addition to the RS-323 to loop converter discussed here on greenkeys for
those who want additional information Bill Henry wrote an article in "The
New RTTY Journal, Fall 2001 issue on building a simple DC 60 ma loop supply
using a couple of filament transformers for any TTY machine. Larry's
converter circuit should interface with it easily.
Bertrand (RXControl) has modified his TTY Terminal program for the ST8000A
and his TTY.exe program is available at
http://rxcontrol.free.fr/TTYTerm/index.html
The program does boot up on my Vista machine, however, I am going to move it
to an older PC with XP that has a serial port and test it out.
I am still digging in the manual for additional information. Anyone who
knows any of the following I would appreciate an email.
a) The ST8000A supports auto-mute. Has anyone tried using this with
VOX and operate without PTT connection? I think this might work with a
dumb terminal to a serial connector, not sure it would with a USB port cable
converter.
b) N1JEB switch setting do not appear to set all of the audio level dip
switches on SW1. I expect each ham setup will require something different
anyway depending on our own audio interfaces.
c) I interpret Table 2.3 in the manual to mean both the modulator
input and demodulator output are transformers in the ST8000A. The manual
does not include schematics so not certain, but both are balanced and appear
to be above ground.
d) I am still confused on whether a single ST8000A can be used to
convert baudot speeds. i.e. Can I receive 100 wpm baudot and output 60
wpm to my TTY machine, etc. (??)
So the adventure begins. I will try to share what I learn and hopefully
others will also. My machines are 28s. I expect to start with a PC as the
terminal and once I get it worked out move on to interfacing my old iron. J
