I am by no means an expert, like most of these guys, but...
My general understanding of using USB to RS232 adapters is that the USB
host controllers cannot work in slower modes, as is needed for the TTY.
This is not a restriction of the adapter, but of the chipset inside your
computer.
This has been discussed many times on this list, check the archives,
you'll find more information in there.
