Bob,
Just a thought on "hamming" equipment, especially military.......
Whenever I buy a new car, I drill a hole in the roof for the antenna. Folks
used to be horrified and tell me how the resale of the vehicle is damaged by
the hole. I reminded them I bought the car for me, not the next buyer.....I
don't care about the next buyer :>)
The ST-8000A's; et. al., that are flooding the market are great
machines...however, the connectors are not as copious and a pain to use. I
did (if I say so myself) a beautiful job of retrofitting my 8000's (I got
two) to RCA conectors and they're infinitley more interchangeable now with
other gear. I'm even planning on adding a loop 60 ma. supply inside the
8000! ! !
The next user has to be satisfied with what he gets...if there's any next
user. BTW, I didn't touch the original chassis, just fitted an aluminum
plate to the rear of the original holes so as not to cut into the
unit....saved the original, very removeable connector/chassis plugs, for no
good reason. That could be the "purist" hiding deep within me...LOL
For most of us, I don't really think there's another generation waiting to
grab these treasures and thus the utility of them is more important than the
purity anymore.
Maybe if we weren't of a dying breed, reliving our history with equipment we
so desired, lusted for, and now have...after many years of waiting, there'd
be merit in purity. Nowadays, I don't think there is.
