Hi Roy,
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) is a family of digital broadband services.
All are provided over twisted copper cable facilities in the feeder
plant.
Expansion of these services are now commonly extended over
distribution plant with fiber optic cable...
nicknamed "Fiber To The Curb." The unit that provides the individual
subscriber channels is the
DSLAM: Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexor commonly called the
"Dee Slam"
or the SAI: Serving Area Interface "Sigh".
There are many versions of DSL, some of which are:
BR ISDN: Basic Rate Integrated Switched Digital Network.
PR ISDN: Primary Rate Integrated Switched Digital Network.
ADSL: Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line.
ADSL+: Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line with expanded bandwidth.
HDSL: High bit rate Digital Subscriber Line.
SDSL: Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line.
SHDSL: Symmetrical High bit rate Digital Subscriber Line.
VDSL: Very high bit rate Digital Subscriber Line.
xDSL: One of a family of Digital Subscriber Line services.
DAML: Digital Added Main Line.
NOTE:
Not to be confused with DLS (Direct Line of Sight)
nor DLC (Digital Loop Carrier system)
