[GreenKeys] TTY Demo at Dayton in 2010?

Hi Everyone,

This year, I went to the Dayton Hamvention primarily to staff the indoor
both hosted by the Morse Telegraph Club. We set up a working landline
telegraph and explained our equipment, the history of the landline
telegraph, and the differences between the codes. We also heavily promoted
how to get started learning the landline Morse and how to use free software
on your PC to create a virtual telegraph wire. This worked out very well
for us and not only did we get a lot of interest, many people joined our
club.

I'm thinking the very same thing could be done with mechanical teletypes.
Motivated members of the greenkeys group could assemble a working teletype
display that I'm sure would attract lots of people. Having just put
together a Model 15, Model 14 Typing Reperforator, and Model 14 TD
demonstration at our local railroad depot, I know it's just not that big a
deal to do it if you have working equipment. It would probably only be
slightly more difficult to have a pair of machines on a local dc loop or use
vintage terminal units like the ST-6 to set up a 2M RTTY link. You could
have one visitor type on a machine and a booth volunteer reply. Seems like
that would be a valid QSO and you could hand out commemorative QSL cards
that say something like "Don't throw away your vintage teletype equipment.
Sign up for the Greenkeys mailing list!".

Because I have my hands full with the landline Morse demo, I'm probably not
a good candidate to organize something like this. However, I would surely
be able to drag some equipment for the demo. If you guys would want to do
that, perhaps you could set up next to our Morse booth assuming the rattle
from the TTY machines didn't make the copy over the morse wire too
difficult. Might be some synergy in having two dinosaur technologies
adjacent to one another.

We have a year to plan this...
