KS7470 oil is still listed in the government's supply system.
The National Stock Number for a quart is 9150-00-448-5009.
As Don House pointed out, it is made by American Oil & Supply
Co. of Eatontown, New Jersey. The NSN name for this product
is "Lubricating Oil, Instrument." The NSN info also shows
the Teletype part no. as a reference: 88970 for a quart and
88971 for a gallon. The "Unit of Issue" price is $50.58 a
quart. Hmmmmmm Just for reference purposes, a quart of
KS7470 oil cost $1.45 in the 1976 Teletype Parts Price List.
In the meantime, I'm happy with 10 wt. non-detergent motor oil.
The specification for KS7470 oil says that the viscosity shall
be within the range of 39.70 minimum to 41.90 maximum at a
temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Don't confuse those
numbers with SAE 40 wt. motor oil. The number (likely) refers
to its Kinematic viscosity. Kinematic viscosity is usually
measured at 40 degrees Centigrade (105 degrees F) and 100
degrees Centigrade (212 degrees F.) A knowledgeable
member of the group may be able to sort out the viscosity
number and come up with a recommendation. If you're looking
for a great way to waste time, do a Google search for
"Comparative Viscosity Classifications." These charts
try to tie all of the viscosity scales together. Happy reading!
Keep those machines running and well oiled.
