Eugene,
You noticed that I used ALL CAPS for the word normally...
This assumes a location where all people are trained in the operations
taking place near the jack fields. In a home different decisions need
to be made. Especially with youngsters (creatures of the carpet ;-)
When using TRS cords be sure to check the spacing of the contacts in
the jacks. Some jacks work very well with the Western Electric
(WECo) type of cords but do not work well with the Audio Stereo TRS
plugs.
The same is true the other way around. If your jack panel is designed
for the use of Audio Stereo TRS plugs they might not work with the
WECo patch cords and associated plugs.
Then there are a whole additional family of TRS cords and jack fields
for higher density applications called "Bantam" they are much smaller
in size. These are much easier to obtain since most of the telephone
industry has converted to their use.
WECo style TS and TRS patch cords are getting harder to find, so many
people are making up their own.
Best,
Don
