Somewhat after the 40s those would have been VFT "tone packs" on
ISB or LSB/USB SSB transmitters. Not sure those were around much in
the 40s, but by the late 50s were very powerful and common. Consisted
of multiple FSK signals close together (170 Hz was the common spacing),
usually 8, 16, or sometimes 20 or 24... and sounded like piston aircraft
engines in the distance...
I suspect the late 40s may have also seen an era of SIGSALY secure
voice - which was supposed to sound like the Green Hornet theme... I assume
some of those HF transmissions were very strong to establish usable links.
