Gun bore brushes are extremely stiff and can scratch. Some of my
friends have used cleaning patches with BRASSO. But the rod is metal
and the tip can get caught in the jack.
Most of my work has been with newer jacks and some of us do not worry
too much about the jacks wired to 130 volts as they tend to be almost
self cleaning.
In audio environments my advice would be to convert to nickel plated
plugs and jacks.

I haven't seen any comment on using small-bore gun cleaning kits. A
kit for a .20 or .22 pistol - using a soft brush or such, would do a
wonderful job cleaning phone jacks. I'd use a 5% de-oxit type cleaner
first (or alcohol or whatever), then finish with a light film of full
strength de-oxit. I've seen gunbore sized nylon "bottle brushes" that
would do wonderfully.
I'd probably use Brasso on the plugs. While it's supposed to
embrittle brass, bronze and copper after a while, I'd say that would
only happen if you polished them every day. Wipe down with the a very
light oil (like maybe gun oil) to clean off the brasso and follow by a
5% deoxit cleaning afterward.
If it were me, I'd probably use just the brasso and wipe off the
excess and use it anyway. Used to do it at the radio station where I
worked ages ago, and it never affected the audio one
