[GreenKeys] Plug and jack maintenance?

I'm finding that some very old plugs and jacks and not making good
contact because of tarnish.  Anyone have instructions for cleaning?

I remember around the old telephone office there was a can of plug
polish that looked a lot like silver polish, and the procedure was
to smear a little on the plug and then use a wrap of something like
shoelace material to polish the plug.  And I remember a conical
bristle brush that could be chucked into an eggbeater type of drill
to use on jacks.  But I don't know if any substance was applied to
the brush, or if it was to be used dry, or as part of some other
procedure.
