Not to belabor a point, but ...

A true Western Electric telephone line cord (as opposed to the import crap) 
is not even stranded, it is tinsel cord.

A very fine tempered bronze alloy ribbon is wrapped around a center thread 
of cotton or nylon. In addition to superior flexion, it primarily served as 
a fusible, current limiting method, "in the old days."
