Yes, The Navy TT-39/UG sets were this way.  Years ago I bought a 
bunch of them from
DOD surplus sales and picked them up at Norfolk depot.  They were 
dated 1954 and
had been slated for installation on various ships, but it didn't 
happen.  (probably
outdated by the newer model 28s)

They were all NOS in crates and a friend and I kept one each and sold 
the rest at hamfests.
They were/are really neat!  I still have mine and there is also one 
aboard USS LST325
Memorial ship.
