You're right Jim,

It has an idle tone on the line.  Pressing "Connect" goes to a higher tone. 
Also, spinning the dial FSK's the idle tone.  I'm going to send some tones 
from the HP osc. into the system on top of the idle tone and see if I can 
make it "ring" for an incoming msg.

A PROBLEM:  The "hammer" which seems to have been a rubber piece has 
"melted" and gooed up the type wheel.  I'm cleaning the wheel but have to 
find something to replace the hammer which I've scrapped off with a razor. 
Going to try one of the things they sell that stick on the bottom of 
furniture and are rubber....should be able to cut one to size for a try.
