Strictly my opinion:
Any unit that is REALLY gunked up - goes through the dishwasher; however
all electronics (motors, coils, relays, switches, etc.) come off first.
Once through the dishwasher - then parts with more than a minor amount
of rust are treated with phosphoric acid (sold as Naval Jelly, etc.).
Then the parts are cleaned with mineral spirits. Parts that have
particularly stubborn "stuff" get lacquer thinner... but watch that
stuff - it's hard on your skin, and ain't good for your lungs.
Parts that have lost their zinc plating (phosphoric acid will flat
remove any plating) are shot with a coat of clear acrylic to give them
some rust proofing. Of course one needs to keep the spray out of working
surfaces - but since most teletype working parts stay oiled down - rust
shouldn't become a problem there, either.
