Hello, I have a question for those on the list that know the model ASR-28 fairly well. I was recently was given a second one that was retired from FAA duty here in Anchorage many years ago and notice some differences I'm not sure about. My first machine operates like this: The selector knob on the front of the machine allows me to either select the keyboard only, keyboard and tape or tape only. The tape perforator in the first machine only punches tape when I'm using the keyboard and not on incoming signals. Now on the second machine here is how it operates. When the line switch is in the test position the front mounted selector switch acts like the one in the first machine except when I go to keyboard only position the perforator in the second machine is out of the circuit like I think it should be but it will only stay out of the circuit as long as my ST-6 is turned on. It appears to get it's operating voltage from the ST-6. When I put the test/line switch in the line position then this is how things work. In the tape only position I get tape only, in the keyboard and tape position I get both as expected. In the Keyboard position I still have both keyboard and tape and now on incoming signals from the ST-6 it prints and punches tape. It appears that the selector switch functions as a way to turn on and off the perforator on incoming line signals. I would like to be able at times to type messages using just the keyboard and not have tape punching as well. The only way to do this is in the test position using keyboard only but then this takes the ST-6 out the loop. In the line position when I am talking to the ST-6 there is no way to mute so to speak the perforator. I seem to recall my late friend Bob who owned the machine before I got it had what appeared to some kind of bale that mounted over the perforator perhaps
to bypass it when he wanted to use just the keyboard ?
