Hi
The problem with the "modern" protocols is that they are error
correcting / retransmit protocols. If the receiving end sends a "nak"
you transmit the same packet again. They all have provisions for
multiple packets in transit, so keeping things lined up is a pain.
The character coding is normally straight ASCII plus a CRC or check
sum for most of them.
