I'm thinking some more...comes slowly these days....
The AP or UPI machines had a micro switch that counted the bell hits.  I 
think there were two different alerts.....one was the 10 bells for a 
CONELRAD warning/test .... surely you remember 640 and 1240....and 3 bells 
were for a bulletin.

When you got the 10 bells you ripped off the copy and stored it to prove to 
the FCC you were receiving the required alerts....putting them in the 
maintenance log.  As I remember, I think, we had to reset the stepper to 
quiet the alarm.

I don't wanna think about it anymore...my brain is starting to hurt!!
