Chuck,
Would that be the same stuff known in the UK as 'Oildag' which I think 
was a mixture of light machine oil and powdered graphite? It was used 
extensively on Strowger telephone switches to lubricate ratchets and 
pawls on the stepping mechanisms. For some reason it was considered 
'dangerous' in more recent days and was replaced by a pink coloured oil, 
I think from Shell.
