Aboard the Battleship USS North Carolina during WW2, I maintained the ECM cryptographic machines.  We did not have teletypes then.  Instructions were to use alcohol to clean with, then lube.  I found that the lube worked better if applied while the machine was running.  I also found that varsol did a good job cleaning and the alcohol (obtained from sick-bay) tasted very good when mixed with orange or grapefruit juice.  The pharmacy mates said that I must have the cleanest machines in the Navy.  All machines were working fine when I was discharged in Nov 1945.  I would like to have a couple of the Mark 7 machines now.  Big Bucks.  John in WV
