ar,

Yes, it's the BARTG Spring Contest. BARTG is the British Amateur Radio
Teledata Group. See http://www.bartg.demon.co.uk/

I made a few QSOs in this year's contest but I was looking for
particular stations and not really working the contest. I was happy to
work Morocco, St. Vincent and Lithuania.

It is possible to use paper tape to semi-duplicate the macros that the
RTTY computer based station use. I make up a tape with my callsign
three times, then whatever the contest exchange happens to be.

Each contest has it's own rules and exchanges vary from contest to
contest. BARTG is a bit difficult as there are three pieces of data
that need to be exchanged: Signal Report (RST), contact number, and
time (in UTC format). Obviously, two of the three pieces of data will
change on each contact. Other contests like ARRL's RTTY Roundup use a
format that doesn't change from contact to contact.

A good listing of all the RTTY contests along with the rules are here:
http://www.rttycontesting.com/records.html

My favorite contests are ARRL RTTY Roundup (ARRL) in January; ANARTS
(Australian) in June; DL-DX RTTY (German) in July; CQ WW DX (CQ
Magazine) in September.

Many of the RTTY Contesters started using teleprinters and are always
helpful.

Howdy folks,

I turned on 14.080 to hear something called CQ BARG or something like
it. Tried to call some but they weren't interested. I guess it's some
kind of contest. Couldn't find anyone just QSO'ing.

Judging by the frantic pace, it's probably all glass machines with
canned monologue. The problem with my is the AN/UGC-74B is one key at a
time :>)

I was copying with the Dovetron directly into the TTY using Mil-188.
The GRC-106A is starting to show its age. First audio output failed,
took apart the exciter/receiver and re-inserted a bunch of
modules....that helped. Then, the scope tube failed, it is new, and I
used the discriminator meter. But, with that USB filter in the
receiver, it's impossible to tune.

Guess I'll take apart the MD-522 now and see what happened to the
picture tube.....hmmmm, I wonder if glass is more fun/less trouble. No
probably not. It doesn't have that hot oil smell.
