Regarding Irv's degree - it was in Nuclear Physics. He was in a 
consultant capacity with the Atomic Energy Commission back in the 
days when the nuclear powered airplane was in the works.

The project went as far as to where they built the runway for it out 
in the desert in Idaho. I don't recall how long the runway was, but 
it was purported to be eleven feet thick. The consideration in this 
was that fossil fueled aircraft are heavy upon takeoff, and get 
lighter as fuel is consumed.

Not so with a nuclear powered plane. It would be just s heavy when it 
landed as when it took off, thus the need for a runway which would be 
capable of withstanding a significant impact force when the plane 
landed.

Irv was quite a guy..
