Did you know that Irv had a phd in physics? He became an airline
pilot after his stint in the Korean war because he was trained as a
pilot in the airforce. His father was a professor at some university
back east. Irv found out he could make a lot more money flying than
he could as a professor like his dad, so he ended up as a 'bus driver'
as he used to put it. He totally wasted his education, except for his
ham career making st6's and writing software for the emerging computer
hobby world.
I knew him for many years, and it was only at the very end that he
admitted to his educational level and degree one night on the old
Compuserve cancer forum just before he passed. I was rather startled
by his admission at the time. Like you mentioned his being a airline
pilot gave him a lot money, and most important a lot of time to spend
on developing electronic/computer stuff.
