GE OM's;
I agree with Don.
I am running Linux. My computer does not have any virus software
installed. Why? - because if set up correctly, Linux is pretty
much safe from them. I log in as user "tony". The only thing I
can do is mess up user "tony" files. I can't go in and corrupt
the system - if it is set up correctly.
The problem with Microsoft products is with the class of people
that exist these days. They want instant gratification. I like to
refer to this as "The Cause Of The Death Of Heathkit" (yeah, some
of it was because prebuilt things were coming in from overseas that
were cheaper than Heathkits) - but I would still pay a bit more for
a Heathkit because: they were fun to build. You'd learn something.
You could pretty much fix it when it broke.
I worked the computer field for almost 30 years. Fortunately 28
of those years were in the high-end dealing with engineers and
scientists that knew ALOT about how the computer worked. When my
company was bought by HP, and the Compaq group came on board, I
got to run into the PC community. People who don't even want to
go thru the effort to put a CDROM in the drive and click on the
INSTALL icon.
To get around that, MS has to make their products so flexible,
for every possible environment, that there are holes all over the
place. Hackers just love MS products because of this and can find
ways to exploit the holes.
Anyway, My ISP is eskimo.com in Washington State. They have been
excellent. I'm stuck with a dialup line but their MODEM is always
available, there has been no downtime, and they also have a news
server. I have unlimited connection time - for $144/year. I think
that is a find deal.

W6ESE - tony
