Being a former transmission product analyst for the Bell System; and
also a regulatory compliance engineer, I have always tried to stay
on the side of vendors and providers that support public standards.
This being said, I shy away from companies that go to great lengths
to overpower the public standard applications with proprietary
software, firmware, and human interfaces.
My advice to anyone making connections to the web and email is to use
services and applications that are open to public standards.
Why is this? It means that competition can keep the costs of
applications and services down. If everyone goes with the high
priced proprietary vendor, that provider can charge whatever they want.
Few people know it, but before divestiture took place in 1984, the
Bell System we were already getting over 75% of our supplies from
other than Western Electric.
My point is don't be a prisoner to the BIG providers and vendors...
I know it is like trying to quit smoking, but try to stay away from
Microsoft and America On Line.
Just my silly 40 plus years of experience talking... pay no attention.
Don
