I should have waited till I looked it up.  The AN/TYC-39 - the end  
item that the surplus printer once belonged -- is an Automated  
Tactical Message Switch.  It's basically a hub for connecting  
different protocols, adding/decrypting data, transferring to a  
Central Office, other AMS's or other switch gear.  This printer was  
most likely the logging printer for the system.
