I built a 6L6 coil back in the mid 60's.  Wasn't real powerful - sparks 
only an inch or so - but to that point - it was the biggest lightning 
generator I'd ever seen in person. It was based on the Popular 
Electronics July 1964 design which was indeed an 811A - but I had 6L6 - 
and with a bit of tweaking - it worked.

You can also build solid-state Teslas - though they (so far) aren't 
capable of the power of the spark-gap monsters. You can even midi 
control a Tesla... more YouTube:

a Google search on both tube tesla and solid state tesla brings up a ton 
of "stuff"...
