Here's an odd thing.

Years ago I worked with a guy called Alan Harry. He mentioned that his
father was a retired engineer who did consulting. I stored that information
away, and several years later called him to help out in the design of a
structure.

He was a guy in his late '70s, and sported a business card that said Norman
Harry, OBE (UK, you understand). Oh - says I - what did you get the OBE for
Norman? Designing the droop nose on Concorde, says Norman! That got my
attention, big time.

Anyway, it turned out that he was a WWII pilot and aircraft designer, and
was one of the few remaining active flyers who could handle historic
aircraft. Anyway, he was invited to inspect a Lancaster bomber in France
for authenticity. He wormed his way into the rear gun turret, and looked at
the machine gun swivel mechanism. He said "I suddenly realised that I had
originally designed the darned thing. And the next thought was that I
wouldn't have designed it like that now! I had to hold myself back and
concentrate on authenticity, rather than re-engineering it."
