Yes, replacing the hammer head is difficult, but with the right tools  
it is not so bad.  Once the new type hammer head is put on it will  
last many years.

Can't you find some kind of glyptol/rubber compound and dip the "head  
of the hammer" into that, let it cure and still have what you need?   
It's a pain to change out that part BTW.
