Thanks to all who wrote explaining the +.
Tom,
on the 1+ I seem to remember that in a stepper office dialing the 1 put you
on an outgoing trunk to a toll office and diverted your call from the local
bank of selectors (beyond the first level selector that is) and connectors.
Thence on to a "camma" office where the girl asked "what is YOUR number
pleeeeze". (she had no way of knowing if you gave your number or your
neighbors :>) who got charged !! I'm not admitting that I ever did that,
however........
