My first TU, built back in 1961 when I was in high school, was a W2JAV type,
with a W0HZR phase-shift oscilloscope on the same chassis (how those
callsigns stick in my mind!). I built both from the plans in Byron
Kretzman's RTTY Handbook.

I still have both the handbook and the 850-cycle shft TU and scope.

These days I drive my Model 28 KSR with a partially homebrew TU that uses
the front-end from a Kantronics UTU. I also use this set-up to drive my
transmitter. The schematic and more details can be seen on my Web site.

The National Semiconductor MF-10 switched-cap filter chips in the UTU,
although now considered obsolete, work really well. I can dig copyable
signals out of the noise. The TU itself is very small and low power, and my
logic board is also small and simple.
