I built my first TU from a kit in the late 70's.
It was a HAL ST-5A. I'm currently switching
back and forth between an ST-6 and a Dovetron.
I don't find a significant advantage in reception
accuracy of one over the other.
Using them both can be interesting, frequently one
will print accuratly when the other is not. It uses
a lot of paper though :)
In the early 80's I built several active filter designs from
HR and 73 magazines. None of them worked as good
as the ST-5A.
One of these days, I want to build a tube based TU.
Jack Hart has a pretty impressive collection of "vintage"
TU's.
